I command you, then, not to flow over my land, nor presume to wet the feet and the robe of your lord
The chronicle of Henry of Huntingdon, 1853

Canute is a collaboration between electronic drum set (Matthew Yee-King) and live code (Alex McLean), trying to touch the abstract. They approach a drum set as a generator of manipulable symbols, analysed into patterns and transformed through live code.

Matthew has performed live internationally and nationally as well as recording many sessions for BBC Radio. In the past his solo music has been released on electronic music imprints such as Warp Records and Richard James’ Rephlex Records. Past collaborators include Jamie Lidell, Tom Jenkinson (Squarepusher), Finn Peters and Max de Wardener. He is a Research Fellow at Goldsmiths College, London, developing new approaches to creative online social networking for music learners.

Alex has also performed widely including at Sonar, Ars Electronica, STRP, Transmediale, Tate Modern and Arnolfini as one third of the live coding band Slub with Dave Griffiths and Ade Ward. He has also performed with Leafcutter John and Paul Hession, and cross-disciplinary projects including with live artist Hester Reeve and choreographer Kate Sicchio. He is co-founder of the TOPLAP live coding organisation, the Algorave collective, and the Chordpunch algorithmic record label. Alex is a Research Fellow at the University of Leeds, collaborating on research into live coding and computational textiles.
