Humming Wires

Palimpi-mashup

Sam Aaron and Alan Blackwell have been exploring live coding together since 2010. During that time, Sam was principal developer of the Clojure-based live coding language Overtone, and creator of the Sonic Pi environment and teaching materials for the Raspberry Pi computer. Alan is creator of the experimental purely-visual live image manipulation language Palimpsest, developed while on retreat in the New Zealand forest in 2012. The Humming Wires emerged from an invitation to perform as a live-coding sound and video duo at the CRASSH conference on Creativity, Circulation and Copyright: Sonic and Visual Media in the Digital Age. Sam’s live-coding band Meta-eX are regular performers on the international live-coding scene. His post in the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory is currently funded by a donation from the Raspberry Pi Foundation. Alan’s day job is as a design teacher and researcher in the same department. Alan and Sam are currently working with a large group of collaborators on the Sonic Pi: LIve & Coding project, funded by the Digital R&D for the Arts scheme.
